BACKGROUND
=================

It took flying his Pilltar into space - something Ron was uncertain he could even do - to dispose of the Clapper's Rubies.  However, no new Marlquaanites would be created via that process.  One hit of the destruction button, and ruby parts went flying everywhere along with Pilltar parts.  There was just enough oxygen up that high to burn up what needed to burn.

Thanks to Tabitha Pang's felony stunt, the Pusher's Ruby was now being stored aboard the Chen.  Anna Ramirez was holding Hester's Locket for Hea Pang while Hea negotiated for her own freedom, saddened only by the fact that she could not also negotiate her daughter's.

Pilltar, Extirpon, Sapphire King, Pablo Ramirez, Anna Ramirez, Botan the Plant-Man, a new high-tech-suited Gray Champion, and a new high-tech-suited Purge-Flare had done it.  Two comm operators as support staff and six field operators had taken out the Icy Finger's operations in both Italy and Mozambique, sending them scrambling to Italy to find new leadership.  But the war was not over.

Those from the Icy Finger who had been given to the Phaletori were planning to build a new base on Phaelon - after destroying the city of Dephinapolis.  Stopping all that was a job for the Phaemer Village Peacekeepers; though the five of them wouldn't be enough to save Dephinapolis this time.  They'd need outside help from the Sodality.  Since the Sodality had been to Phaelon once before, it didn't hurt to make another trip.  Except getting them out of legal hot water so they could go would be an issue.

Keet Kabo, Purge-Flare, Socratic, Jackal, and Time Capsule were all set and ready to return to Phaelon.  Yet, Desulon and Avori warned them they'd need as many friends as possible.  Fortunately, Slip-Sadie decided to take Candi's advice and advocate that she be given to the Peacekeepers to fill in for Bolte Chipotle during his days when farming was too important for hero work.  Lex - and the state of Texas - both agreed to those terms.  Sadie had been bouncing around her whole life between living on the streets and being in various prisons.  There was simply no place for a strange creature with lubricant superpowers like hers any place on Earth.  (Well, no place she wanted to be, anyway.)

Even with Sadie joining the PhVP, this wasn't enough.  Extirpon, Gray Champion, Sapphire King, and Botan were willing to go to Phaelon too.  However, they wanted to visit with their families first.  John Domeck was able to negotiate Marge's temporary release from minimum security so that Mapacha could partake of the mission to Phaelon.  However, he was unable to secure release for either Hea from house arrest nor Tabitha from hard time.  Team Gray was becoming a lot smaller.

Extirpon got to visit his wife and child briefly; but told them he had to go to Phaelon and finish the fight if they were to ever have any hope of living in peace - let alone finding someone else to do his job.  He got the blessing of both to go.

Jeral was overjoyed that Emily wouldn't have to do any more prison time.  However, she was now expected to work aboard the Chen in order to stay out of trouble.  She'd be a SCALLOP scientist.  This meant that when not working, she'd be stationed at a cottage along the shoreline - in Mexico.  Jeral had no problem with that.  He'd simply have to figure out how to disguise himself as the native plant life to that area.  But before he could start his life over with her in Mexico, he had to save Dephinapolis.

Tiffany was finally out of the tower.  The Navyrope Foundation was doggedly determined to keep her, Jordan, and Vince from being captured by the Texas Rangers.  So they had to lay low.  Navyrope could not be a part of this new fight.  Black Rat was able to get Stung Hornet back - temporarily.  There was no way the Chinese MSS was going to not punish the Icy Finger.  Mingmei knew she'd be returning to hard time and possibly death row; but would accept any chance to be a hero again even if for an ungrateful society.  Sniperbadger would have to sit this one out.  Ciem, Earwig, Emeraldon, Feruga, Taterbug, and Jackrabbit were all able to negotiate traveling rights, provided they resumed their parole sentences afterward.

IN THIS SCENE
===============

The Sodality could function without Hea, Sniperbadger, Navyrope, Jordan, and Tabitha in play.  Slip-Sadie joining proved to more than make up for that.  But what was still missing from the team's spirit was a good taste of that Lambrelli Labs metal.

Jonathan Tannuli, given his petty crime history, was never going to be allowed to operate a Pilltar unless the Beliah Amendments were thoroughly repealed (if not the entire Kirby Act.)  Ron Barrin, for evading arrest, was barred from operating a Pilltar upon his return to Toklisana.  Going into space was out of the question now.  Besides, he had a company to run.  Stephanie had deteriorated in health to the point that she was transferred from prison to a mental institution.  Strawberry was out of commission.  Possibly forever.

Team Pilltar was not one to give up; even if there were no Pilltars or Strawberry Pilltars left to pilot.  Roger had been barred from becoming Ponicatar specifically in the event that Ron would attempt such a loophole.  That, and Roger was not fond of the idea of visiting alien worlds.  After some talks with Lex, Jonathan was now safely able to pay his wife a visit.  He especially wanted to know if Stephanie were pregnant - and how far along.  First, Ron put himself at risk to see his daughter again.  She needed him now more than she ever did as a child.

Ron: "I know what you're thinking.  You didn't want a big spectacle, so you didn't want to tell me about Jonathan right away.  Totally fair.  But if I'm gonna be a grandpa, I need to know about it."

Stephanie: "Dad, this isn't a good time to talk about that."

Ron: "Well, not in detail.  Just...thought I'd get the worst of it out of the way.  I know the criminal charges are crap; but not much I can do to erase that.  I'd have to bankrupt our whole treasury on a gamble.  These sharks just seem to love you too much.  You tolerating the medicine in here?"

Stephanie: "I'm on a low dose, because of the baby.  Not sure if my stomach is from the meds, or morning sickness."

Ron: "You've fallen pretty hard.  But survived.  I know you'll bounce back.  Better than I ever could."

Stephanie had an immediate flashback to the night before.  Up alone in bed, she cried out in prayer for some sort of indication of what to do.  She felt a hand touch her shoulder, and gently whisper: "Remember you and Dolly."  She looked and saw no one there.  At this exact moment, the words began to make sense.

Stephanie: "Remember Dolly....crap!  That's it!"

Her eyes lit up, but she tried to keep her voice low lest she be dragged off in a straight jacket.

Ron: "Dolly's got a little friend on her ankle.  Not sure she'll be of much help.  Look...you were very brave for me and Jonathan when we ran away and you took the heat.  Now I gotta find some way to help our friends out on Phaelon and make this right.  It's my turn to be brave."

Stephanie: "Dad....that's not it!  Dolly and I were working on a project..."

Ron: "From prison?"

Stephanie: "You'd be amazed what SCALLOP allowed us to get away with.  Dad...this could merge us and the Malestroms into one company!"

Ron: "Okay, now I'm really curious."

Stephanie: "You can be brave by getting Lex here.  I need his help to negotiate."

Ron: "Negotiate for what?"

Stephanie: "A tool bench.  And some parts.  I have nothing better to do."

Ron: "You can't pilot any Pilltars."

Stephanie: "This isn't piloting!  I don't want to make another Pilltar here.  I want to make Pilltar obsolete!"

Ron: "The AI programs at Malestrom Industries?"

Stephanie: "Isn't it high time that our droids could think for themselves?"

Ron: "To a limited extent.  Seth was always suspicious of anything having a mind of its own that wasn't human."

Stephanie: "Dolly and I were working on safeguards in case of that very thing."

Ron: "If they're not gonna be avatar droids, then what are they?"

Stephanie (after some thought): "Mercenaries!"

Somehow, Ron suspected she'd also build another GEORGE.  It didn't matter.  Daddy's little inventor had only one way out of her problems: build her way out.  And build she would.  All he could do was embrace the young woman he'd raised this far, and fulfill her wishes while having faith in her vision.
