BACKGROUND
==============

Celia knew this would happen.  As the Beliah Amendment enforcement movement kicked into overdrive in Toklisana's Congress, it soon became obvious this was a diversion so no one would be paying attention to an investigation into how many members of the Toklisanan government were secretly Icy Finger spies.  With the Phaletori trying to reclaim Phaeleel and the Hebbleskins eradicated, the Icy Finger sought to fill a huge power gap this created.  They were slowly conquering Arkansas through their Screwworm terrorist network, and establishing a puppet regime known as the "Chrome Kite."  Yet, the Screwworms kept everyone around the globe busy.

So busy, in fact, that even SCALLOP was unable to respond to everything in time.  SCALLOP had to carefully play both sides during that time, both aiding the Sodality and incarcerating them, as the Beliah Amendments made them and all their family members automatic outlaws.  Internment was seeming like a fair compromise.  But first, they'd have to secure rights to hold the Sodality's members that hadn't successfully fled into exile as wanted fugitives.  That meant assisting police in arresting all these members for purposes of internment.

The McArthurs were mostly clean, save for some not-quite-finished business Candi had with her past conviction for luring Gobar's goons into a death trap.  Fleeing town to save their son sealed their fates: Little Frank got put in SCALLOP child care.  Candi would have to go back to jail.  And Donte would serve a short stint too!  It wasn't fair.  It was the (f)law though.  Dolly was taken back to jail, just because.  Jeraime hated it; but saw no good alternative to letting his wife be taken.

Others were scattered, with entire modalities split in half over whether to go into exile as "Spaghetti Liberation" or stay behind and risk capture as "Caged Dove."

Spaghetti Liberation needed the Sapphire King to foil Rappaccini's plans in Italy and Mozambique.  Celia realized she was the weak link.  She also knew that with her old friends Candi and Dolly at high risk legally, someone would have to fight the battles they couldn't.  She went with Angelo to Houston, and immediately proved helpful in defeating Lionfish and his assistants.  However, it didn't take long before they identified her as the girl with outstanding warrants for trespassing, petty theft, and possibly playing a role in Jim Oisdaat's accidental suicide.

It wouldn't be Taterbug's last hurrah ever.  However, it would be the last hurrah for at least a month.  And more to come would have to wait a few more after she was successfully deported back to Italy.

In the mean time, she knew that the crowds were on her side.  Yet, here she sat all the same: in a jail cell, waiting to learn her future.  She could see it now clearer than she had in years: a hand of God hard at work to juggle Volition Dilemma Paradox while still working out even this twisted and dark situation to her benefit.  Because He wasn't about to give up on her; and not because she deserved to know Him or be loved.  After all: she once abandoned the Sodality when things got rough!  And God was the farthest thing from her mind the first time she had sex with Jordan.

Did she really deserve all this?  Did it matter?  She had to travel the path set before her.  No matter how unfair, no matter how scary, no matter how powerless she felt.  To her benefit, her current cellmate was just some single mom with an overdue unpaid parking ticket.  She was able to use this situation to give the other woman some advice on her daughter:

"Give her what her soul needs, not what her ego needs.  It's scary she wants to be me.  If she's to become the Taterbug at all in the future, tell her to become a better one.  Don't make my mistakes."

Hearing that a child looked up to her had an impact on Celia.  Finding her mom and reestablishing contact with her now-husband Jordan were important.  So was looking out for her friends.  So was being able to stop the Icy Finger all over the world.  However, if she had to do a few months of jail time to pay for some past wrongs, she was determined to endure it now - even if it killed her.  She couldn't risk a child that looked up to her seeing her as a coward.  She made mistakes, and had to pay for them.  Lest she make an even bigger one, by leading a child astray though a bad example.

Kids need heroes.  Celia realized she needed to be a better hero than she was.  And she couldn't do that if she took too many shortcuts.  Still...who in their right mind would want the Taterbug for a role model?  Some kids choose their role models poorly.
